News

For a narrow hallway, the best shoe storage is a flip-drawer cabinet between 18cm and 26cm deep. The drawers tip forward so shoes stand at an angle, which fits 12 to 18 pairs into far less depth than a standard shoe cupboard.

That pile of trainers by the front door is the first thing you see when you get home and the first thing a guest trips over. In a narrow UK hall, a 30–40cm-deep cupboard swallows the walkway. A slim flip-drawer cabinet sits almost flat to the wall, hides everything behind a clean front, and gives you a top for keys and post. Here's how to pick one that fits your hall and your family's shoes.

Capacity: how many pairs will you actually fit?

Work out how many pairs live by your door, not how many you own. Then use the "per drawer" figure, because it tells you more than the headline number.

  • About 6 pairs per drawer is typical for a cabinet around 60–76cm wide. Two drawers hold 12 pairs, three hold 18.
  • About 8 pairs per drawer on the wider 80–90cm cabinets, such as the glass-top and louvred two-door models (16 pairs each).
  • About 2 pairs per drawer in the 18cm-deep cabinet. It trades capacity for the slimmest footprint we sell, so it suits one or two people.
  • About 3 pairs per tier on an open rack. The 8-tier rack takes 21–24 pairs in a 60cm width, the most of anything here.

The headline figure assumes everyday shoes on both levels of the adjustable shelf. Most of these cabinets have a shelf you can move or remove, which makes room for taller footwear but lowers the pair count.

Ventilation: let shoes breathe

Closed drawers keep dust off and hide the mess, but damp shoes need air.

  • Louvred or slatted doors let air circulate inside the cabinet. The 18cm and 81.5cm-wide louvred cabinets above both have them.
  • Open mesh shelves on the 8-tier rack let air move all round each pair, and the bottom shelf sits 8.5cm off the floor, so you can vacuum underneath.
  • Solid flip drawers are the tidiest look. Let wet shoes and wellies dry out on a mat first, then put them away.

Depth and fit for a narrow UK hallway

Under 20cm: the 18cm louvred cabinet. It's the one to choose when every centimetre of walkway counts.

23–25cm: the glass-top cabinet (23cm) adds a slide-out drawer for keys and polish. The 3-flip-door cabinet (24cm) goes tall rather than wide, holding 18 pairs in a 60cm width with an open shelf on top.

26cm: the most choice. The natural wood 3-drawer cabinet holds up to 18 pairs; the white and gold tilt-out cabinet stands on 15cm legs, so the floor underneath is easy to clean, and has a full-width top drawer; the industrial cabinet is the lowest price in the table at £45.95.

Check your shoe sizes

Flip drawers work because shoes stand at an angle, so there's a size limit. Several cabinets above take up to UK 8; the tilt-out and both louvred cabinets take up to UK 9.5. If someone at home wears a bigger size, or you need space for chunky boots, an open rack is the safer choice.

How to measure your hallway

  1. Measure the walkway you need to keep clear. Tape the cabinet's footprint on the floor for a day and walk past it with a bag in each hand.
  2. Measure depth from the front of the skirting board, not the wall. The cabinet sits against the skirting, so it will stand out by that much more.
  3. Leave room in front for the drawers to tip open, and check that the front door, any internal doors and the radiator all clear it.
  4. Check the height under windows, light switches and coat hooks before you choose a tall cabinet.
  5. Fix it to the wall. Seven of the eight products in the table come with anti-tip straps or wall fittings. Tall, slim furniture needs them, so use them.

Frequently asked questions

How deep is a slim shoe cabinet? Our slim cabinets range from 18cm to 26cm deep. A standard shoe cupboard is often 30–40cm.

How many pairs of shoes fit in a flip-drawer cabinet? Usually about six pairs per drawer, so 12 in a two-drawer cabinet and up to 18 in a three-drawer one. Wider 80–90cm cabinets take about eight per drawer.

Do shoes need ventilation in a cabinet? Damp shoes do. Choose louvred doors or an open mesh rack if your shoes often come in wet, or let them dry before putting them in a closed drawer.

Can I store boots in a slim shoe cabinet? Ankle boots can fit once you remove the inner shelf, as long as they're within the cabinet's maximum shoe size. Tall boots are better on an open rack.

Should a shoe cabinet be fixed to the wall? Yes. Slim cabinets are tall for their depth, so fit the anti-tip straps or wall fittings supplied.
